Expanding Access for Everyone, E-Book "An Introduction to the Geology of Indonesia" Officially Launched

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The Geological Engineering Study Program of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) held the launch event for the e-book "An Introduction to the Geology of Indonesia" by Prof. (Em) Dr. R. P. Koesoemadinata at the East Hall of ITB, Ganesha Campus, on Friday (January 1, 2024).
In his opening speech, Dr. Eng. Mirzam Abdurrachman, S.T., M.T., Head of the Master's and Doctoral Programs in Geological Engineering at ITB, stated that this e-book aims to expand access to knowledge about Indonesian geology.
"At the age of 89, Prof. Koesoemadinata wants to ensure that his work and knowledge can reach more people," he said.
Previously, the printed version of this book had been distributed for free to various universities in Indonesia with geological engineering programs, as well as to institutions and agencies related to earth sciences. The book has also been sent to embassies as part of an academic contribution on a global scale.
As one of the primary references in the field of geology, this book has been used by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) in the planning of Nusantara Capital City (IKN). With 600 pages covering extensive research and in-depth studies, this book serves as an important source of knowledge for academics, practitioners, and policymakers in Indonesia.
During the event, ITB Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., expressed his appreciation for the remarkable contributions of Prof. Koesoemadinata.
"This book is not only valuable for ITB but also for Indonesia and the world. The knowledge contained within is an invaluable legacy that will continue to benefit future generations," said Prof. Tata.
He further stated that the launch of this e-book is expected to inspire students, academics, and researchers to continue their work and make meaningful contributions to science.
"With this digital version, this knowledge can be accessed more easily by anyone, anytime," he added.
The launch event concluded with a discussion session featuring geological academics and practitioners, including Prof. Ir. Benyamin Sapiie, Ph.D., a professor of structural geology, and Ir. Awang H. Satyana, an independent Indonesian geologist.
Participants welcomed this initiative and expressed hope that more scientific literature would become widely accessible to further advance earth sciences in Indonesia.
