BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — Eleven students from the Physics Engineering Student Association (HMFT ITB) and the Mechanical Engineering Student Association (HMM ITB) collaborated on carrying out a community service program in Cluring Village, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, from January 30 to February 8, 2025.
This activity was originally a program run by the Social Movement Division of HMFT ITB, led by Deftendy Virgiatman (Engineering Physics, class of 2021). One of the division's community service programs, SOS-X (Social Service Expedition), was executed by 11 students with Akmal Pramudya (Engineering Physics, class of 2022) serving as the Initiative Manager. In executing this expedition-based program, they collaborated with and received support from Pertamina New and Renewable Energy.
Their program covered the fields of education, technology, and environment. Deftendy Virgiatman mentioned that aside from the expedition, they utilized this activity as a learning opportunity as well. “Since our activity was based on expeditions, we also brought along fundamental questions about what we could learn throughout our time in Banyuwangi,” he said.
In this activity, the students also received support from KAI (Indonesian Railways), allowing them to accomplish the program in Banyuwangi with optimal access since they had to carry necessary logistics to the location.
The ITB students’ program was warmly welcomed by various local stakeholders. This is done as shown with support given by the local and regional government, school principals, and residents of the village.
The students held community service activities at elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels at SD, SMP, and SMA Negeri 1 Cluring. Various programs were held with the aim to educate and improve the participants’ skills. Elementary school students received lessons on energy and the environment, including a coloring competition titled “I Love The Earth” to raise awareness of environmental issues through art.
Meanwhile, junior high school students at SMPN 1 Cluring received a range of workshops, including journaling to encourage ideas and self-expression through creative writing, a session on awareness regarding bullying and empathy-building, and an eco-printing workshop.
At senior high school level, the students attended workshops and awareness sessions on bullying, motivation for pursuing higher education, renewable energy and energy-saving technologies, and an introduction to basic electrical circuits.
Deftendy Virgiatman mentioned that the residents and government of Cluring Village were very open and supportive for the students to carry out the program. He hopes that this community service program will continue to benefit the local community through educational enrichment, environmental awareness, and technological skills development. “We hope that programs like this will continue in the future with wider reach and greater impact. For the expedition team, may the spirit of sharing and serving not end here, but become an everlasting motivation to contribute wherever you are,” he stated.
