In essence, research university is differ from teaching univeristy, especially when it comes to organizational function and structure. When teaching univeristy's main function is preserving and teaching science thtrough education, research university took a whole different function which are developing new sciences through research and post-graduate education, also duffusing science in the community by doing research and community development. As a research university, it is necessary to be more responsive toward solving the surrounding problems and to be more anticipative with the future challenges.

Those divided function lead to the demand of different university's structure. Principal components of teaching university are the major itself and its research groups who operates in mono-discipline and non-interactive way. However, research university not only need the mono-discipline programs but also multi and inter-discipline program. Each of the research groups were supposedly interact continuosly in order to keep producing new sciences and gorund-breaking breakthrough. Also, another particular character of a research university is the integration of teaching activity with the center of community development and the research gorups who produce innovation in science.


Challenges Ahead
With the decision in constitutional background for ITB as PTN BH, the new chapter has just begun. "It is important for ITB, as the university who gains legal status, to carry the mission for being more responsive toward solving the surrounding problems and to be more anticipative with the future challenges," said Akhmaloka.

Besides, the era of globlization has raised the complexity of problems in developing the nation. for example, global trading has opened bigger opportunity for new players in the global industrial supply chain. But before they enter the market, much preparation and adaptation must be made. The US's and Europe's economy crisis and the political issues in the middle east had driven the global investation stream towards Asian countries. Those facts were not only regarded as an opportunity but also a big challenges.

Prof. Intan Ahmad as the Head of Academic Senate explained that ITB together with other universities in Indonesia must perform better education and research to catch the gap in science, technology, and technique. "Nonetheless, at hte same time we must give enough attention so that the effort in education is not only produce an intelligent and skillful alumni but also produce the next generation who understand the problems faced by our nation," explained Intan.
