3 Academic Fields at ITB Ranked Among Global Top 150 in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025

JAKARTA, itb.ac.id – Three academic fields at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) - Petroleum Engineering, Mineral & Mining Engineering, and Art & Design - have secured positions in the global top 150 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on March 12, 2025. ITB stands out as a leading institution in both Narrow Subject Areas and Broad Subject Areas.

In the category of Narrow Subject Areas, two ITB fields are ranked #51–100 globally: Engineering - Petroleum and Engineering - Mineral & Mining. Art & Design is ranked #101–150 globally.

Meanwhile, nine other fields of study at ITB are ranked in the global Top 200 to 500 range, and all are ranked first nationally, as mentioned below:

1. Architecture / Built Environment: Ranked #151–200 globally, 1st in Indonesia
2. Engineering - Chemical: Ranked #301–350 globally, 1st in Indonesia
3. Engineering - Electrical & Electronic: Ranked #301–350 globally, 1st in Indonesia
4. Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing: Ranked #151–200 globally, 1st in Indonesia
5. Materials Science: Ranked #401–450 globally, 1st in Indonesia
6. Mathematics: Ranked #401–450 globally, 1st in Indonesia
7. Chemistry: Ranked #451–500 globally, 1st in Indonesia
8. Environmental Sciences: Ranked #501–550 globally, 1st in Indonesia
9. Physics & Astronomy: Ranked #501–550 globally, 1st in Indonesia

In the Broad Subject Areas category, two ITB fields also made it to the world's Top 500 and ranked first nationally:

1. Engineering & Technology: Ranked #282 globally
2. Natural Sciences: Ranked #401–450 globally

For these achievements, ITB received an award from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) as a Globally Achieving University in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. The award was presented directly by the Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., to the Rector of ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., at Building D of Kemdiktisaintek, on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

This award is a form of recognition for efforts to enhance the quality of Indonesian universities toward becoming world-class institutions.

Based on the results of the QS-WUR by Subject 2025, universities in Indonesia have shown significant progress. Several academic disciplines have entered global rankings, indicating that the quality of national higher education is increasingly recognized internationally.

The performance of universities in the QS-WUR is expected to enhance national competitiveness through the contribution of research outcomes and downstream innovations for economic development. This achievement is also anticipated to elevate university reputations and open opportunities for academic collaboration with strategic partners, research institutions, and global industries.

Minister of Higher Education and Science, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., stated in his speech that this is an extraordinary achievement by Indonesia’s top universities. It is proof that Indonesian institutions are on par with world-class universities.

“This ranking is not merely a number or sequence, but a reflection of the hard work and commitment of university leaders, lecturers, researchers, students, and education staff in building a high-quality, innovative, and globally competitive educational and research ecosystem,” he said.

He also noted that this global ranking is a key indicator of developing the quality of human resources. An excellent university is capable of producing graduates who are competitive, innovative, and ready to face global challenges.

"We would like to express our highest appreciation to all university leaders who have been included in the QS-WUR. This is clear evidence that Indonesia can compete at the international level. Hopefully, this achievement will motivate us to continue enhancing the quality of higher education in the country," he said.

This award serves as tangible proof of ITB's strong commitment to advancing the quality of education and research. This achievement is expected to inspire all members of the ITB academic community to continue innovating and contributing to the development of science and technology.
