BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The “salam genggam mesin” (grasped-hand salute) stands as an iconic symbol of the Mechanical Engineering Student Association (HMM) of ITB. With a clenched fist and thumb tucked between the fingers, this gesture signifies strength, resilience, and unity. Yet, this symbol’s meaning is often interpreted differently.

For the Mechanical Engineering Student Association of ITB, the “salam genggam mesin” is a symbol of pride that took inspiration from historical and cultural values. One of its influences stems from the symbol of strength in ancient Greek traditions. The clenched fist represents bravery and resilience—values that closely align with the spirit of the association in facing technical trials.

SiAn identical symbol can also be found on the Ki Jagur cannon, now displayed at the Fatahillah Museum, Jakarta. The cannon carries a clenched fist ornament that symbolizes bravery and protection. Ki Jagur itself holds importance in Indonesia’s history, especially in the line of defense. However, as with all symbols, its meaning has unfortunately often been reinterpreted. In European culture during the Middle Ages, the symbol was believed to bring fortune and ward off negative energy.

Misinterpretation of symbols is not uncommon. Many others have experienced such ambiguity in meaning, for instance:

1. The horned hand gesture: In some cultures, it is believed to protect against evil spirits, while in others, considered an insult;

2. The swastika: Originally a symbol of good fortune in Indian and East Asian cultures, it has since become widely associated with dark connotations due to its use by the Nazis;

3. The “OK” hand sign: While it signifies “good” or a means to say “okay” in many Western countries, it is perceived as offensive in places like Brazil;

4. The heart hand gesture: Many people see it as an expression of love, yet in some communities, it is viewed as excessive or insincere.

The Mechanical Engineering Student Association of ITB chose to adopt the “salam genggam mesin” because it embodies strength, unity, and perseverance. It represents the determination and fighting spirit that the association wishes to instill in all its members, encouraging them to move forward in the face of adversaries.

With a deeper understanding of the history and significance of the “salam genggam mesin”, it is hoped that this symbol can be perceived in a more positive light. This salute is not only a gesture but also an emblem of the noble values passed down through history that live on in the Mechanical Engineering Student Association of ITB.
